A foolproof way of making your lawn look nice the easy way.

While there are always critics I can only speak from personal experience. I am not a professional lawn care maintenance person. My brother is and I work with him a lot but as I suppose with any trade there is always more to learn. That being said I can tell you what ANY home owner with a modest budget can do to improve their lawn 100%.

Lets face it as with any huge company some have poured it all into research and development. This is surely the case with Scott’s. I tried the plan Scott’s recommends for a great lawn. You can find it on the back of the bags or products and usually in the lawn and garden section of your local hardware or lawn and garden store.

They make it pretty easy. Like I said it is not the cheapest thing in the world but then what is. Like the saying goes… you get what you pay for. But compare that to the cost of a professional lawn care company coming out and truly only doing a mediocre job and the price savings is quite phenomenal. All you need is a bit of discipline and you will be pleasantly rewarded with a great lawn. And if you’re like me after a long day at the office that is actually quite therapeutic.

It’s actually a lot easier than you would think to have a nice lawn. The Scott’s plan is simple. You’ll need a nice hose, sprinkler, and a drop spreader. You will also want a sprayer. I really like the ones that attach to the end of the hose like a little jar and you simply fill them with whatever liquid you are using at the time.

The plan starts with a “weed and feed” type plan. I think there is a liquid that you can put in your hose sprayer container. It doesn’t really have to be Scott’s brand. Weed-n-Feed is great. That will get rid of most of the unwanted vegetation in your yard. You may still have crabgrass. Just get a crab grass killer for your drop spreader or your hose sprayer. Most of them are pretty good. Crabgrass drops it’s seeds in the fall and sprouts right up next spring so kill it early before it can drop it’s seeds for next year. And stay on it. This may involve spraying multiple times in the early spring and into summer.

But hey once all the weeds and crab grass is gone you can be sure your grass has other nice plots of land to fill in. You could at this point do a top seeding with your drop spreader. It is not all together necessary because those holes will fill in simply by the way grass grows which I will explain in detail in a later blog. But whatever the case the fertilizer in the “Weed-n-Feed” will have your grass filling in those holes pretty quickly.

After this you only need worry about water for the most part. You may want to do some bug treatment if you have many other bushes etc. in your yard. They aren’t usually that much of a problem in a simply grass covered yard. But that’s totally optional. I’m approaching this in a manner to keep the budget to a minimum so do what you can afford.

Next you simply follow the “Scott’s” plan. It requires you to do a spring, summer, and fall spreading. This helps plants take off in the spring, keeps them healthy in the harshest part of the summer, and protects them against the colder weather for winter.

If you’ve done all this and kept it at a proper moister level your lawn will look great.

Two other tips, don’t mow it too low, mow it slightly more frequently, and don’t over water… that can be just as bad. You want your grass to have to grow strong so don’t baby it to much or it’ll expect to be pampered it’s whole live and not fair well with mother nature.

Give it a shot and let me know how it goes. I Also welcome tips you have so be sure to email them to me and I’ll be happy to post them with a link to your site.
